Alternative suggestion for "galaxy": *élihwinde "star-whirl"

Robert Reynolds Mar 16, 2018 (15:21)

In *élikombe and *élihwinde, are you using i as a connecting vowel? I would think e a more likely connector based on its use in the longer form elen and initial short e in the unstressed beginning as in elatan and elostirion: *elekombe > *elkombe (or directly, without a connector) and *elehwinde (or historically justified *eleswinde based one’s interpretation of VT48:29,34). I like *himta-, though I’m unsure about the mt cluster: it appears in kamta- but otherwise assimilates to nt. *Lindóra seems quite useful for generic large numbers. Auve is a nice usage of preposition + pronoun; I wonder if au takes ablative noun objects. *Palantilla is an elegant adj-as-noun along the lines of palantir- and essentially using the natural “instrument/implement” ending -il as in makil < makla, tekil < tekla. Suffixing -ma gives *palantirma as another word for some distinct far-seeing object.

Astronomy-wise, “star-collection” is a suitable general form; “star-whirl” could work specifically for spiral galaxies like those in this beautiful image. “Light-year” could be *kalayén or *kalyén in this case in which the exact distance doesn’t matter but “year” here means one solar Earth year (technically a Julian year of 365.25 days @ 86,400 seconds per day), so when accuracy matters, *kalkoranar would be my rendering.

Nice!

+Robert Reynolds *palantilla was modeled on kilintilla so indeed essentially an adjectival participle (*tirla).
I based *auve on arse, but maybe that sort of formation does not work with just any preposition. I have to think about it.
I was thinking of órikuvoite when I coined *élikombe/élihwinde

Robert Reynolds Mar 16, 2018 (16:30)

+Tamas Ferencz At least several other prepositions (ka, as, et at a quick glance) are attested with pronomial suffixes so I think it auve is a valid regular conjugation. órikuvoite seems to use a stem form óre (óri-) so one may consider whether él has a similar stem. The attested compounds that use it initially don’t need vocalic stem extensions and those that use it finally aren’t listed as having stem forms, but there aren’t conclusive examples. √EL seems to have √ELE as a variant but that may be tied specifically to the interjection; I haven’t reread the primary source. I think the initial vowel will be short based on the attested él compounds and inspired by o- vs. ó- prefix forms based on stress, but that may not be conclusive either.

+Robert Reynolds we can cut the Gordian knot by using okombe instead of kombe and make the compound *élokombe.

Robert Reynolds Mar 16, 2018 (17:43)

+Tamas Ferencz That works, and the long initial vowel prevents syncopation: tidy. 🙂
