For "puppy", what would roa + -ince become? Ravince? Or would huo + ince become huince?

Ицхак Пензев Jan 08, 2018 (20:41)

Maybe, húnellë?

Александр Запрягаев Jan 08, 2018 (20:50)

I do not think roa as 'dog' really holds, after many a consideration, I think 'lion' was the correct definition, especially with other derivative of the same root. As for the question, perhaps this stem does not use this way of deriving at all, or KHU3-INK-ē > huinke indeed.

Paul Strack Jan 08, 2018 (22:48)

I vote huincë as well.

Tamas Ferencz Jan 08, 2018 (23:45)

Is uink even possible?

James Coish Jan 08, 2018 (23:56)

+Ицхак Пензев húnelle leans more toward little hound.

James Coish Jan 09, 2018 (00:18)

+Tamas Ferencz I think it could. Though early we have ui with a consonant cluster in iluindo.

Paul Strack Jan 09, 2018 (00:22)

+Tamas Ferencz Good point. The double consonants would prevent the creation of diphthong. Maybe huike or huwinke? Or perhaps húnike? None of those sound appealing to me, but huwinke sounds “least bad”.

James Coish Jan 09, 2018 (00:23)

Huike might work best as the ending is written I(n)ki.

Ицхак Пензев Jan 09, 2018 (10:12)

Well, is -incë the only diminutive suffix we have?

Tamas Ferencz Jan 09, 2018 (10:29)

+James Coish on the other hand porokelle is distinctly chicken, not small hen.

Ицхак Пензев Jan 09, 2018 (11:33)

+Tamas Ferencz that's exactly what I meant.

+James Coish thinking about iluindo I have a feeling that the ui there is not really a diphtong as it's on a morpheme-boundary, it's two distinct vowels with a hiatus, with stress on I: iluIndo

Ицхак Пензев Jan 09, 2018 (14:22)

And what is the most neutral word for a dog, then?

James Coish Jan 09, 2018 (15:04)

Huo...but not huan (hún-)
